Writing down your feelings and thoughts as they come, without judgment and self-censorship, is an easy way of coping with your experiences and emotions. Not only that, it's also one that's super effective and positively impacts our health. Today I'll share a bit on how writers can include this beautiful self-help tool in their everyday life.
First of all, what are the benefits of journaling?
→ it's a reliable tool for processing emotions. As you write about what you're experiencing and feeling, you express it out, giving it space to exist
→ calms down inner clutter. By writing things down, you gain clarity, new insights and fresh perspectives. And writing worrying things in a list helps calming down the racing mind
→ supports self-consciousness
→ enhances focus, memory and creativity
There are many ways how to journal. You can free write whatever comes to your mind. You can write about things you're grateful for. You can focus on a specific topic and write your thoughts about it.
Then there are also journaling prompts. Those are questions or statements designed to inspire your journaling by offering a stating point for reflection.
Here are some prompts I find useful:
Which parts of yourself am I hiding?
When do I feel most insecure?
Which things do I judge in others?
Which patterns keep showing up in my life?
What is holding me back?
What does my soul crave?
What does my inner critic say?
When did I feel truly free and content?
What am I not allowing myself?
Outside of just writing, you can also draw or doodle to express what you're feeling. Or, my favorite option - you can connect the two together.
Journaling is a great tool for everyday use, and it's helpful to include it in your daily routine. Even five minutes can be enough, so don't hesitate and no excuses!
There's no good or bad way to journal. You don't even need to use a paper notebook, notes on your phone can work just the same. Don't judge yourself, don't push too hard. Take time time to slowly get into it and explore if journaling is something for you or not.
