WHAT ARE BINAURAL BEATS?
Binaural beats are a sound trick your brain does. When you listen to two tones with slightly different frequencies at the same time, one in each ear, your brain doesn’t just hear both separately - instead, it creates a third "phantom beat" at the difference between the two.
When you listen to binaural beats, your brain activity matches the frequency set by the frequency of the beat. This is called the frequency-following effect.
Although there was some research conducted on whereas binaural beats really work or not, we don't yet have enough evidence to settle for "yes" or "no". What we do know is that binaural beats MAY help reduce your anxiety and improve your mood alongside other effects, but more research needs to be conducted.
Please keep that in mind and work with a professional if you're going through tough times.
Binaural beats waves types are:
Delta (0.5–4 Hz): deep sleep, relaxation
Theta (4–8 Hz): meditation, creativity
Alpha (8–14 Hz): calm but alert
Beta (14–30 Hz): active thinking, focus
Gamma (30+ Hz): high-level thinking, memory
Let's now have a look at how writers can use binaural beats in writing, whether to improve their focus or induce higher creativity.
DELTA
These are the slowest brainwaves, dominant during dreamless sleep and deep rest. It can support incubation of ideas (the brain keeps processing story problems subconsciously while you rest). Best to listen to while falling asleep.
THETA
Associated with creativity, intuition, and flow.
Helpful for idea generation, brainstorming, world-building, or poetry. Best when you’re freewriting or exploring concepts.
ALPHA
Linked to calm focus and relaxation.
Ideal for when you want to ease into writing sessions without stress. Great for overcoming writer’s block, as it reduces mental chatter. Overall helps with anxiety and stress.
BETA
Light beta (~13–16 Hz) promotes focused concentration. Useful for editing, structuring chapters or learning. Careful - too high beta (>20 Hz) may increase anxiety, so stick to low–mid range.
GAMMA
Used for high-level inspiration, memory recall, and connecting ideas. Great for working on complex plots or research-heavy projects.
SUGGESTED BINAURAL BEAT RANGES FOR WRITERS:
6 Hz: boost creativity, imaginative thinking
7.5 Hz: balance between relaxation and ideation
10 Hz: relaxed focus, great for steady writing
13 Hz: focus & creativity, great for longer writing sessions
14 Hz: sharper concentration, useful for editing
Sessions of 15–45 minutes are usually enough before the brain adapts. I'd recommend listening on headphones for beats to work properly.
Let's now move into THETA HEALING. What is it?
Theta healing uses guided meditations / visualizations in theta to uncover and rewrite old blocks. By doing so one can change limiting beliefs, release emotional pain, and invite healing through visualization or intention-setting.
In writing, it can be used to access subconscious material, remove creative blocks, and channel deeper ideas.
Unlike binaural beats, theta healing is working directly with our subconscious mind.
Theta healing can be used:
→ to heal the inner critic
→ to discover and release creative blocks
→ to learn more about motivations and desires behind our writing
→ to soften our perfectionism
As I'm writing about theta healing and binaural beats I cannot leave subliminals untouched.
Nili already made a post on subliminal messaging in writing, but what about audio subliminals? How do they work?
Subliminals are designed to be perceived by the subconscious mind without conscious awareness. This means that if you consciously have a hard time accepting compliments or positive affirmations, using subliminals can help you a bunch. Additionally it's also an excellent manifestation tool. Calming sounds or music is put over the messages, so we cannot HEAR them, but our subconscious mind can.
There are great subliminals on YouTube for enhancing creativity, focus, inspiration or even specifically ones for writers. I strongly recommend checking them out!
I also have my own subliminal channel. Feel free to check it out.
The last thing I want to mention in this post are Solfeggio frequencies. They are specific sound frequencies that have been around for centuries and are believed to have powerful effects on the human body and mind. Many claim that these tones can stimulate healing, reduce stress, and even awaken intuition.
174 Hz - heals psychical & emotional pain, increases courage, relaxes muscles
285 Hz - increases energy, good for immune system, heals on many levels
396 Hz - liberates guilt & fear & grief, cleanses negativity, good for inner peace and root chakra, grounding and returning to reality
417 Hz - facilitates change, enhances creativity, manifests intentions, clears trauma, sacral chakra, removes negative energy
528 Hz - transformation, self-love, confidence, solar plexus chakra, increased life energy, awareness, clarity of mind, deep inner peace
639 Hz - attracts love, positive energy, emotional balance, heals relationships, harmony, heart chakra
741 Hz - self-expression, problem-solving, purifies body and mind, throat chakra, empowerment, speaking one’s truth and self-confidence
852 Hz - awakens intuition, raises vibrations, inner strength, third eye chakra, connects to the spiritual
963 Hz - high-level intuition, psychic vision, crown chakra, raises the positive energy and vibrations, helps us return to our very source
Now that you know a bit about those fascinating concepts, go on YouTube to explore them more. You'll find some creators even mix them together, for example subliminals with binaural beats. Have fun discovering what works the best for you!
