Creativity isn't constant, that's just how it is. Some days you're full of ideas and motivation to create, some days... you're not. There are many ways how you can support your writing journey more, and today, we'll talk about one of them: attuning your work to the moon phases. Aligning energy with the natural flows of the universe can bring your structure and inner calm as well as help with productivity and rest.
In its 29.5 day cycles the moon governs our emotional landscape and subconscious mind, reflecting natural rhythms of the universe.
Aligning writing with the moon phases can be done by tracking the moon with a lunar calendar application and setting writing milestones accordingly.
NEW MOON
The New Moon marks the start of the lunar cycle.
→ key words: introspection, self-analysis, reflection, fresh start
• setting intentions for story writing and reflecting on what you want to explore
• brainstorm the ideas, let them pile up and flow
• start a new project! It's a perfect timing to start character creation and world building, as well as outlining the plot
• journal about your creative goals
• create a vision board for your project
WAXING CRESCENT
As the moon grows from crescent to full, energy builds.
→ focus on work and educating yourself
• write consistently, expand on your ideas, develop plot points, and deepen character arcs
• spend time on world building and researching needed details
• use affirmations and subliminals to boost confidence
• set weekly writing goals
FIRST QUARTER
The moon is half-illuminated, representing a crossroads where obstacles may arise, requiring action and decisions.
→ key words: grow, self-healing, intuition, lucidity
• explore your writing blockages
• resolve plot issues
• make important creative choices
• take short breaks to refresh creativity
• try freewriting to release stuck ideas
WAXING GIBBOUS
Almost full, the waxing gibbous moon signals a time to refine your work and prepare it for the spotlight.
→ pause and patiently observe the state in which your projects are
• look at your work and ask yourself if you feel satisfied, if there are any parts you'd like to change
• refine your work, add details
• keep inspiring yourself, consume inspiring media and books
FULL MOON
The Full Moon is a time of peak illumination, both literally and metaphorically. It’s perfect for:
• reviewing your work, seeing what’s working and what's not
• seeking feedback and sharing your art with trusted people
• using the full moon to write a powerful emotional scene
WANING GIBBOUS
The moon shrinks back to new.
• free yourself from negativity, practise self-compassion and gratitude, remember why you started
• revise and edit your work
• fix plot holes or character development holes
• incorporate feedback
LAST QUARTER
• it's time to finalize your project
• cut unnecessary content
• declutter your writing space (literally and mentally)
• slooow down
WANING CRESCENT
The moon returns to darkness, signaling the end of the cycle and a time for rest before a new beginning.
• take a break, reflect on your work this month, and think about your next steps without making any big decisions
• rest, rest, rest!
• if you feel like engaging in creative activities, try something outside of writing
• look back to what you accomplished this month. Where can you improve?
