Beta-readers

I don't know about you, but I wouldn't be able to continue the work on my stories if I didn't have people I could show it to and ask for their opinions. I would overthink every single detail of my writing before abandoning it for a new one and a dopamine shot. But I don't, since I have my own beta readers.

Who is a beta reader? "A beta reader is a test reader of an unreleased work of writing, typically literature, who gives feedback to the author from the point of view of an average reader" (Wikipedia).

But there are more people working on each book, so let's talk a bit about them.

Beta reader reviews a draft that went through at least one revision. Alpha reader, on the other hand, reviews a draft that is still without an ending or is completely unrevised.

Then there's the proofreader (whom I used to be for a short while), who looks at grammar and spelling and they're being paid for it.

A critique partner is an another writer who test reads from the perspective of an author.

Sensitivity reader is someone from a culture that the author is not familiar with.

With all that being said, what does a beta reader do?

→ provides feedback about the story

→ points out areas which need improvement

→ constructively criticizes

→ helps the writer refine the story

Where do you find your beta reader?

→ your friends and family members

→ online writing communities

→ local writing groups if available

→ websites such as Reddit, Goodreads, Scribophile

How to properly beta read so both sides are satisfied?

→ before you start, clarify what kind of feedback is expected and welcomed; some people may need a harsh critique whole others may just need a bit of encouragement

→ chose a way of communicating your insights, for example highlighting the parts which don't work of taking notes

→ don't be afraid to point out inconsistencies, plot holes, pacing issues etc

→ don't just focus on negative stuff, highlight good stuff as well

→ while reading keep reflecting and paying attention to the story

QUESTIONS TO WONDER ABOUT WHILE BETA READING

Are the characters believable?

Does the pacing drag in the middle?

Were the plot twists predictable?

Did the dialogue feel realistic?

Did anything feel unnecessary?

Was there anything missing?

Are the emotional beats hitting?

Is the ending satisfying?

What's working?

What's not working?

What is confusing?

Am I interested?

You can have multiple beta readers at the same time, if you want. You can also beta read for your beta reader, if they're also writing. It's a beautiful thing to share your art with other artists after all.
