DEPENDENT PERSONALITY DISORDER is a disorder characterized by a submissiveness, helplessness, and belief of incapability of taking care of oneself. It's a personality disorder, meaning it's a lasting pattern of behavior starting before adulthood and visibly out of socially accepted norms.
SYMPTOMS:
• trouble making simplest decisions, like what to wear or what to eat, without others' reassurance
• they don't want to cause conflict in their relationships, resulting in passiveness and submission
• difficulty starting tasks
• strong fear of losing others and being left alone
• urgently needing to form a relationship with someone who will provide care and support
• pessimistic, anticipating negative outcomes
• perception of oneself as powerless and ineffectual, coupled with the belief that other people are comparatively powerful and potent
• willingness to go to great lengths (eg, do unpleasant tasks) to obtain support from others
CAUSES:
• abusive relationships
• childhood abuse or/and neglect
• genetics
• cultural or religious practices encouraging reliance on others to great extents
HOW TO CURE:
• talk therapy + anxiety medication
Often paired up with other disorders, such as: depression, anxiety, alcohol use, other personality disorder.
Dependent personality disorder can be similar to borderline or avoidant personality disorders. However, there are key differences that we need to remember about. People with borderline aren't necessarily as submissive and their emotions tend to be more explosive, whereas avoidant people are much more withdrawn.
