Imposter syndrome in writing

Ever felt like you don't deserve the praise for your art?

Like your successes are just coincidences or good luck?

Like you're unworthy of being recognized?

Like you're actually really bad at what you're doing?

If you said yes to any of those, you might be experiencing imposter syndrome.

Imposter syndrome is a rather common problem among both artists and non-artists. Its symptoms are:

→ overwhelming doubts and strong self-criticism

→ fear of being noticed, fear of success

→ difficulty accepting praise for art

Why does one have imposter syndrome?

→ perfectionism

→ high self demands

→ comparing to others

→ unresolved insecurities

→ unrealistic goals and/or expectations

→ negative relationship with oneself, low self-love, low sense of self value

→ no external validation

Imposter syndrome can further cause...

→ procrastination

→ avoiding the topic whatsoever

→ lack of creative ideas

→ writing block

→ lack of motivation

Advice for what to do about this issue:

→ celebrate small wins - np. buy yourself coffee after finishing a chapter

→ take things step by step - first finish the chapter, then the book, then go thro proofreading,...

→ connect with other writers

→ practice self-compassion

→ create a supportive environment

→ …maybe take a break from the whole writing thing until you're mentally fit for it again ;)
